Gatwick Airport North terminial:-
The inspection of UK Border Agency operations at Gatwick North Terminal explored the efficiency
and effectiveness of the UK Border Agency across immigration and detection functions using the
Independent Chief Inspector’s published criteria (Appendix 1). The key themes for inspection were
operational delivery, safeguarding individuals and continuous improvement. The primary areas for
investigation were:
• the quality of decision making in granting or refusing leave to enter the UK;
• the basis for challenging or searching passengers in the detection of illicit goods; and
• the consistency of approach and treatment of passengers at the primary control1 and in detection
channels.

Observation of immigration staff at the primary controlde monstrated that staff complied with the requirement for 100% passport swiping against the Home Office Warnings Index. However, a few isolated instances were observed where officers did not wait for the full opening of biometric chips.
